As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
